Kalam signs quota bill

The legislation to provide reservations to SC/ST and OBCs in Central educational institutions has become a Law with President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam giving his assent to it. An official release said, reservations in institutions established, maintained or aided by the Central Government will be implemented from 2007 academic session. The law provides for a mandatory increase in seats in Central educational institutions over three years from 2007.

The provisions of the Act would not apply to Central educational institutions established in tribal areas, institutes of excellence, research and that of national and strategic importance, besides the Minority Educational Institutions.
The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admissions) Bill, 2006 was passed by Parliament last month.
